Lines of research
At the scale of the New Aquitaine Region, the Oncosphère project is divided into five themes developed on the sites of Bordeaux, Limoges, Poitiers, La Rochelle and Pau:
- Fundamental and translational oncogenesis
- Tumor microenvironment
- Technological innovation
The research projects carried out in connection with these themes can fall into three areas: Translational research, basic research and technologies for the Oncosphere.
Axis 1: Basic research
This axis is based on a strong fundamental research exploring the fundamental mechanisms of the healthy cell: how cells divide, how they regulate their metabolism, how they deal with aging, what are the mechanisms of cell death … using a panel a variety of experimental models ranging from unicellular eukaryotes such as yeasts to murine and human models to small animals such as the fly, worm or zebrafish. This work will serve as a basis for understanding how a healthy cell becomes cancerous and in particular what are the molecular bases of oncogenesis, the mechanisms of tumor progression and metastatic spread, the signaling pathways involved, metabolic changes, the role of the microenvironment , the role of the immune system and the biology of cancer stem cells.
Axis 2: Translational research
This axis aims to identify new therapeutic targets, to decipher the mechanisms of drug resistance and to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic tools through a translational research rich in connections with the clinic. This work will utilize cellular and animal models of cancer as well as human tissue from tumor libraries.
This axis will also include epidemiology and public health work, particularly in the context of the environment, as well as human and social sciences including particularly the evaluation of scientific innovation, support for children and young adults and determinants of decision-making.
Axis 3: Technologies for oncology
In order to improve the early diagnosis of cancer and to offer a therapeutic arsenal that is better adapted to each patient, technological developments are essential. This axis will propose a varied technological research based on a wide range of hard sciences like mathematics, physics, chemistry, optics, bio-statistics … It will work in close collaboration with the biologists and will develop new tools for optimize the diagnosis, better define the prognosis, improve the therapies by making them not only more targeted but also personalized.
Joint projects within the five regional themes (fundamental and translational oncogenesis, tumor microenvironment, technological innovation, aging and environment) will be carried out in conjunction with the other research teams in the New Aquitaine region, Limoges, Poitiers, La Rochelle or Pau, whatever the discipline.
